Two words, one question
When you say "exactly" – are you agreeing with a thought, or avoiding the act of thinking? This report asks that question without offering a definitive answer, because there isn't one. But the question itself, examined carefully, carries threads that reach into language, platforms, cognition, and collective memory.
Three voices produced this text: synthesis, structuring, source verification, and most of the prose were done with AI models; direction, criticism, and the final word belong to the human. The initial framing – "exactly = epistemic parasitism = platform capitalism" – was found to be speculative and revised; popular claims (the 8-second attention span, digital dementia) were debunked before the arguments were rebuilt. Every unverifiable reference is explicitly flagged.
The body of the report moves in a spiral rather than the linear sequence of an academic paper: it looks at the same phenomenon – what two words actually do – from historical, structural, linguistic, and cross-cultural layers; each layer deepens the question opened by the one before it.
The migration of a word
The Turkish word "aynen" comes from the Arabic root ayn – eye, essence, the very thing itself. Its earliest written record in Turkish appears in Meninski's Thesaurus of 1680. At that time, "aynen" carried a concrete meaning: "as is, verbatim." Legal and administrative documents used the phrase "metni aynen kopyala" (copy the text exactly); the word was an oath of fidelity, a pledge of faithfulness to the original.
From the 17th century onward, the word drifted from its concrete meaning. "Aynen öyle oldu" (it happened exactly like that) no longer meant verbatim reproduction but resemblance – "just like it." By the late 20th century, the word shifted once more: saying "aynen" to someone who remarked "it's hot outside" was neither reproduction nor resemblance but pure affirmation. In linguistics, this process is called pragmaticalization: the word is abstracted from its original semantic content and becomes a discourse marker (Hirik, 2019).
But something else happened in the 21st century. When "aynen öyle" (exactly so) migrated into digital communication, it was severed from facial expression, tone of voice, pause – from the body language of context. What remained were two words, a kind of skeleton: the bone structure stands but the flesh, skin, and facial muscles are gone. What this skeleton does – whether it builds connection or kills thought – is now entirely at the mercy of context. The etymological journey ends in a paradox: a root meaning "the very thing itself" has evolved to a point where, on its own, it means almost nothing.
The memory of panic
Complaining that "young people are ruining the language" is one of humanity's oldest reflexes – the recorded history goes back to 2000 BCE. In Sumerian school tablets, teachers and fathers complain about the young; the famous quote "The young are disrespectful, they defy authority" is apocryphal. In 400 BCE, Socrates warned that writing would weaken memory. In 1492, the monk Trithemius feared the printing press would kill the art of the manuscript. In 1858, the New York Times wrote that the telegraph encouraged "thoughtless communication." In 1961, the FCC Chairman blamed television.
Looking at this list can produce a kind of hypnotic effect: "It's always the same panic, it's always been wrong, so today's must be wrong too." But that inference is a lazy shortcut. Socrates' worry about writing carries an interesting paradox – the culture of memorization really did weaken, the risk of superficial reading really did increase; but without writing, philosophy, science, and democracy could not have developed. Every technological complaint meets the same fate: it turns out to be partly right but predicts the consequences wrong. It correctly diagnoses the real losses and fails to imagine the real gains.
So the "exactly" question demands the same care: neither "everything is the same as before, the panic is unnecessary" nor "this time is different, everything is ruined." The right question is: where is it different this time?
Platform capitalism diverges from previous technological transformations at five concrete points. First, irreversibility – there are 5.3 billion internet users and the number only grows. Second, social restructuring: digital citizenship, remote work, and online education are now the rule, not the exception. Third, cognitive restructuring – neuroplasticity research shows that screen use physically reshapes brain circuitry. Fourth, scale and speed: the spread of the printing press took centuries; the internet achieved universal penetration in 30 years. Fifth, pervasiveness: modern society can no longer function without digital infrastructure.
The result is a paradox formula: evolution within rupture. The algorithmic mechanisms are new, but the panic pattern is familiar. Keeping this formula in mind is critical for maintaining balance through the rest of the report.
The reaction the machine wants
To understand platform capitalism, three theorists need to be placed side by side. Tim Wu (The Attention Merchants, 2016) showed that the trade in attention began in 1833 – with the first penny newspaper; selling attention as a commodity is not new, digital platforms merely scaled it up. Nick Srnicek (Platform Capitalism, 2017) defined data as the raw material of the 21st century and demonstrated that the real business of platforms is not selling products but harvesting user behavior. Shoshana Zuboff (The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, 2019) went a step further, introducing the concept of "behavioral surplus": platforms do not merely collect data; they use the collected data to predict and steer future behavior.
The synthesis of these three perspectives is this: platform capitalism is the product of the continuity of attention commerce and the rupture of behavioral capitalism. And this resultant creates an architecture that structurally rewards minimal reactions like "exactly."
There is concrete evidence for this. The MSI (Meaningful Social Interactions) algorithm revealed in the 2021 Facebook Papers leak awarded 1 point to a like and 5 points to an anger emoji – meaning the interaction the system considered "meaningful" was not thoughtful interaction but fast and emotional interaction. The same documents contained an internal employee note stating: "Our algorithms exploit the human brain's attraction to divisiveness." Sixty-four percent of extremist group joins came from Facebook's own recommendation system.
Think of a riverbed. The bed determines where the water flows – but the force that moves the water is gravity. Platforms are the riverbed, human behavior is the water, algorithmic incentives are gravity. "Exactly" is the path of least resistance in this system: it takes one second to type, requires no thinking, and is counted as "engagement" by the algorithm. If the system rewards fast, low-cost reactions, the proliferation of minimal affirmation expressions is not a choice but a direction of flow.
Two ghosts: fabricated statistics
Anyone who wants to discuss this topic must first get rid of two ghosts – the two most common weapons of digital culture criticism, both of them fake.
The first is the "8-second attention span" claim. This claim is entirely fabricated, and tracing it is instructive. The document cited as the source is a 2015 Microsoft Canada report – but it was prepared not by the research division but by the advertising division. Microsoft took the data from a website called "Statistic Brain"; when BBC journalist Simon Maybin investigated this source in 2017, he found no study containing such a statistic in the US National Library of Medicine, which Statistic Brain had cited (Maybin, 2017). Moreover, no one has ever systematically measured the attention span of a goldfish – the comparison point – that piece of information is a pseudo-scientific urban legend. But the claim was so appealing that it infiltrated everything from Time magazine to TED talks. Gloria Mark's actual findings (Attention Span, 2023) are far more nuanced: the speed of switching between screens has increased (average screen time dropped from 2.5 minutes to 47 seconds), but this is not a neurological decline – it is a behavioral adaptation. The brain did not deteriorate; the habit changed.
The second ghost is the concept of "digital dementia." It does not appear in the DSM-5 or the ICD-11 – meaning psychiatry's two fundamental diagnostic manuals do not recognize this category. A 2025 meta-analysis covering 57 studies and more than 411,000 participants found no evidence supporting the hypothesis. Furthermore, high technology use was associated with a 58 percent lower risk of cognitive decline – meaning if there is a correlation at all, it runs in the opposite direction.
Clearing away these two ghosts matters, because if we want to think seriously about the "exactly" question, resting our arguments on fabricated statistics undermines us from the start. Attention capacity has not diminished, but attention behavior has changed; digital dementia is not real, but the effect of social media on mental health (small though it may be – roughly 0.4 percent of total variance) is a real correlation. Sorting out the false fears makes it easier to see the real questions.
Touch – the skin of the word
In 1923, Bronislaw Malinowski, while conducting fieldwork in the Trobriand Islands, made a curious observation: the islanders engaged in hours of "meaningless" conversation – weather, roads, food, weather again. These conversations carried no information; no one was telling the other something they did not already know. Malinowski named this phenomenon "phatic communion": communication conducted for the sole purpose of establishing social bonds, oriented toward maintaining a relationship rather than transmitting content.
Malinowski's discovery is one of the most underestimated concepts in the history of linguistics. Because by "phatic" he did not mean "empty" – on the contrary, he argued that this kind of communication was the glue holding the social fabric together. Asking "how are you?" every morning in a village is not a request for information; it says "I'm still here, I'm still with you, the bond between us continues." The content of phatic communication is not the message itself but the existence of the message. This distinction is critical: labeling phatic communication as "meaningless" follows the same logic as stripping the plaster off a building because "it's not load-bearing" – true, plaster is not load-bearing, but strip it away and the building begins to rot.
Daniel Miller's 2016 ethnographic study (Social Media in an English Village) carried Malinowski's concept into the digital age. Miller tracked Facebook use in an English village for 18 months and found that most likes were not aimed at transmitting information but at establishing social bonds. Pressing the like button, most of the time, did not mean "I read what you shared and found it valuable" – it meant "I see you." Michele Zappavigna's concept of "ambient affiliation" takes this a step further: on social media, people continuously emit a low-intensity signal of solidarity – a kind of digital murmur, an unbroken "I'm here" whisper flowing among friends (Zappavigna, 2011).
Seen through this lens, "exactly" can carry a legitimate and even necessary social function. When a friend says "today was awful" and you reply "exactly, mine too," you are not leaving them alone. If the context is casual conversation or emotional support, "exactly" is a phatic touch – like the skin of the word, the surface visible from outside, yet the layer that protects the tissue beneath. The trouble begins when this skin is asked to cover every surface.
Parasite – the bone of the word
If phatic communication is the skin of the word, epistemic parasitism is a disease that eats into the bone. Let us define the concept: the behavior of adopting the result of someone else's epistemic labor – thought process, argument structure, evidence evaluation – without participating in that process, without understanding it, without reproducing it. This definition comes from the tradition of virtue epistemology (Zagzebski, 1996); knowledge is not merely true belief but true belief acquired through the right process. When the process is skipped, what looks like knowledge is not knowledge but the shadow of knowledge.
Think of the way light falls in a forest. Light passing through leaves reaches the ground as dappled patches – each patch is real sunlight, but someone who sees only the pattern on the ground cannot deduce the shape of the sun. Epistemic parasitism works like this: a person who sees the conclusion cannot see the thought process that led to it – the branching and pruning of arguments, the eliminated alternatives, the weighed evidence. When you say "exactly," you are affirming the patches of light; whether you have seen the sun remains unclear.
Placing this concept at the center matters, because the real danger of "exactly" is not individual ignorance but collective epistemic erosion. One person saying "exactly" in one conversation is trivial. But millions of people, hundreds of times a day, in political matters, health issues, and public debates settling for "exactly" – that creates an epistemic pipeline that circulates someone else's intellectual labor without questioning it, without running it through one's own filter. Knowledge no longer spreads through thinking but through clicking.
This is where the phatic/epistemic distinction sharpens. It is easy to say that "exactly" carries two different functions depending on context – what is hard is seeing how these contexts blur into each other in practice. In a WhatsApp group, someone shares a political news item; three people type "exactly." Is this phatic or epistemic? Are they building social bonds, or validating the accuracy of the news? In all likelihood they are doing both – but they are not distinguishing between the two, and that failure to distinguish is the most fertile soil for epistemic parasitism. In casual conversation and emotional support the risk stays low; but when academic debate and public affairs are at stake, epistemic laziness disguised as phatic function leaves real damage.
Turkish has its own story
The number of academic studies directly addressing "aynen" (exactly) in Turkish can be counted on one hand – and all of them date from after 2019. Baydal and Kiziltan (2021), in a paper presented at the 20th International Conference on Turkish Linguistics, identified three functions of "aynen": agreement (47 percent), alignment (38 percent), and confirmation-seeking (15 percent). Efeoglu-Ozcan's 2022 doctoral thesis at METU defined "aynen" as a register-specific response token – a tool that activates in casual speech, not in formal language. Parlar (2022), writing in the journal TULLIS, called the word "the new wild card of everyday language." Hirik (2019) analyzed the pragmaticalization process through the concept of "substitution" (degistirim): the word detaches from its original function and finds a place within a new linguistic economy.
What these studies have in common is that they treat "aynen" as a linguistic phenomenon – they have not examined its epistemic dimension, its digital context, or the effect of platforms. No systematic study exists on close relatives like "tabii" (of course), "kesinlikle" (absolutely), or "elbette" (certainly); informal affirmation expressions like "harbi" (for real), "cidden" (seriously), or "vallahi" (I swear) have not been studied at all. Usage patterns of minimal expressions on WhatsApp and Twitter have not been investigated. No comparison has been drawn between Japanese aizuchi and Turkish affirmation markers. And most importantly, the epistemic costs of "aynen" – its effect on depth of understanding, source criticism, and capacity for independent thought – have never been measured. The literature is in its early stages; the terrain is unmapped.
Other languages, other fires
In Japanese, the concept of aizuchi is the closest cultural relative of "exactly" – but it carries instructive differences. Aizuchi are the affirmation sounds a listener gives to a speaker: "un," "ee," "so desu ne." In Japanese, affirmation sounds are markedly more frequent than in English (Maynard, 1993; as cited in Hatasa, 2007). This mechanism does not transmit information; it says "I hear you, go on." A phatic function, and in Japanese society this function is one of the load-bearing elements of the social fabric.
But the digital age is transforming aizuchi too. The "un" sound in face-to-face conversation carries tone, timing, and facial expression – it gives away whether the listener is truly listening. A sticker sent on LINE has been stripped of all these cues. Does approval given through a sticker carry the same depth of understanding as approval given with the voice? There is no experimental data to answer this question yet – but the question itself is identical to the "exactly" question: the digital medium may be preserving the phatic function while evaporating the epistemic dimension.
In India, a lethal form of this evaporation emerged. In the world's largest WhatsApp market, with over 500 million users, fabricated news items – child abduction and organ theft rumors – led to dozens of mob lynchings between 2017 and 2019. The mechanism worked like this: someone received a message, forwarded it as "forward as received," the recipient did the same, a chain formed, and at the end of the chain people died. WhatsApp was eventually forced to limit the number of message forwards – but the structural problem remained in the platform design itself: the forward button was always one tap away.
Consider the "forward as received" culture: the person who receives the message becomes the person who forwards it without questioning its source. This is the purest, most dangerous form of epistemic parasitism – a person circulates someone else's epistemic labor (or worse, someone else's lie) without passing it through any filter. The distance between saying "exactly" and saying "forward as received" is shorter than one might think: both are acts of endorsing content produced by someone else without running it through one's own epistemic process. The difference lies in the weight of the consequences – in one case a conversation stays shallow, in the other people die. But the underlying mechanism – endorsement without epistemic labor – is the same.
The India case shows why the "exactly" question is not merely a linguistic curiosity. When minimal affirmation expressions combine with the right platform architecture and social fragility, they produce measurable – and sometimes irreparable – consequences in the real world.
Testing the unproven
There is a point at which this report must be honest: most of the arguments above have not yet been empirically tested. Experimental designs (randomized controlled trials), longitudinal studies, cross-cultural replication, neuroscientific validation (EEG/fMRI) – none of these have been conducted specifically on minimal affirmation expressions. Digital communication corpora partly exist, but no analysis focused on minimal affirmation has been carried out.
We propose four testable hypotheses. First, the depth-of-understanding hypothesis: participants encouraged to use "exactly" will perform worse on comprehension tests than those encouraged to summarize in their own words. Second, the source-criticism hypothesis: individuals heavily exposed to minimal affirmation expressions will show lower accuracy in evaluating source reliability. Third, the platform-incentive hypothesis: minimal affirmation expressions will be more prevalent on platforms with character limits and like mechanisms. Fourth, the group-dynamics hypothesis: groups with high "exactly" density will show increased groupthink and decreased decision quality.
None of these hypotheses has been proven – but all of them are testable, and they need to be tested.
An honest ending
The list of what we do not know is long: epistemic costs have not been empirically measured, platform-language causality has not been proven, whether the variable is generational difference or duration of exposure remains unclear, and comparative Turkish data does not exist.
"Exactly" in the digital age is neither a pure epistemic failure nor a pure social function. It is a contextual phenomenon. In one conversation it can be glue, in another a solvent. The right question is not "is 'exactly' good or bad" – but which function comes to the fore in which contexts, and how epistemic risks can be reduced. – This Report
